The Hawks and Their Friends - Jakata Tales - BabbittJataka Tales
A sweet tale of peace showing that harmony is possible even among friends with different backgrounds. When the Hawk family is threatened by hunters, the Kingfisher, Turtle, and then the Lion come to their aid. The hunters fight hard, but with the Lions help, the animals are safe and the harmony of the island continues.
The Stolen Plow - Jakata Tales - BabbittJataka Tales
A tale whose cunning and argument illicit a smile. When the man is told his plow was eaten by mice, the plow’s owner takes the man’s son and counters with an equally unrealistic scenario of the child having been taken by a bird. The sensible judge makes it right, but it begs to question the description of the two men being best friends.
Beauty and Brownie - Jakata Tales - BabbittJataka Tales
Two deer siblings, Beauty and Brownie, who could not be more different. Beauty who listens intently to the father and Brownie who forgets the father’s directions. Beauty’s skillful obedience saves the herd under its care for the season. Unfortunately, Brownies forgetfulness results in the deaths of the herd under its care.
The Elephant and the Dog - Jakata Tales - BabbittJataka Tales
An endearing story of friendship found, friendship lost, and friendship found again. When a thoughtless elephant keeper fails to see the special friendship between the dog and elephant and sells him to a farmer, the result is an elephant in despair. The thoughtful, kind king resolves the situation, the dog returns to the elephant, and all is made right between the two friends.
