Feedback Strategies

How to Give bad Feedback Without Sounding like a Jerk

This article peaked my interest, because I am horrible at giving feedback. I either sound like a bitch or my point does not get across. I had always been told that the "sandwich" method is best and am happy to hear that it is not, because it never works and I always think I am doing something wrong. I like the let's get real, I'm human, you're human method. I have always though honest is the best policy and I am implementing this method in my everyday life, when applicable.

Silence the Critical Voices in Your Head

Sabina Nawaz’s article “Silence the Critical Voices in Your Head,” provides excellent insight into a problem that occurs all to often with us all - micro-focusing on the negative. Nawaz’s article was written utilizing a workplace environment, whose goal would be ultimately increasing productivity. However, the advice could, and should, apply to any facet in one’s life to yield a happier self. Nawaz’s suggests that you should use the rule of hearing or saying 5 positive voices for every one voice when working. Again, in my opinion this rule is equally applicable in life, just not in the workplace, and can extend far beyond just auditory messages. Indeed, touch, smell, sight, and taste could easily be substituted or supplemented in Nawaz’s rule. Th article provided sound advice and a reminder of a practice we should all enlist.

  1. Hey Hannah,

I am so glad that I came across your post on feedback strategies in the blog stream as it made some great points. I agree that giving feedback has also been one of my weaknesses as I am not sure if my point is being misinterpreted. Being as clear as possible is definitely key to giving good feedback.
